Coachella wrapped, but the chatter on socials hasn’t moved on. And they’re all raving about the first Filipino Coachella act ever:
BINI.
They made history, front and center. 3 million mentions on X in under 8 hours, and the most-viewed female act of the entire festival, second only to Justin Bieber.
Through the BINI Coachella moment, they’ve achieved more than global renown. Philippine lawmakers filed a resolution commending BINI, with the official congressional record placing them as the first Filipino act to elevate OPM to the global stage, and as national symbols of Filipino excellence and artistry.
They’ve also been appointed as the island-nation’s national cultural representatives.
But what you don’t see is how they got there.
What’s the story behind BINI, and what did seven to eight years of buzz-less, unglamorous preparation look like before they were propelled onto the global red carpet?
Before There Was BINI Coachella: Eight Filipinas and an Audition
It was for “Star Hunt: The Kapamilya Grand Audition.” This 5-day bootcamp enticed thousands of applicants from all over the Philippine archipelago, 250 making it through the grueling first phase. Then 50. Then less. Until it boiled down to the final 8, aged 22 to 25, the Filipina artists we know today as BINI:
Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena.
The K-pop Idol Training System
This was no ordinary training following the bootcamp. It was K-pop-earmarked, and everyone knows just how notoriously brutal said pressure-cooker K-pop regimens are.
For the Star Hunt trainees, they were drilled to the bone by both homegrown Filipino vocal coaches and choreographers under main dance coach Mickey Perz. The management also brought in Korean choreographers who’ve worked with BTS, Twice, Seventeen, and Red Velvet, specifically for the idol training system.
That went on from 2019 to 2020. However, BINI P-pop girl group didn’t debut until two more years later.
The BINI Debut, But Not Really
We’re talking 2 to 3 years of training and preparation before the first public BINI performance. “Da Coconut Nut,” BINI’s pre-debut single, dropped in November 2020. Their debut single “Born to Win” came out in June 2021.
The title was aspirational, with no viral buzz around it. No trending reels of what would later be the Philippines’ first act on a global stage that history will file under:
“A turning point for Filipino music globally.”
But they were betting on themselves before anyone else was familiar with their name.
Years Of No Applause
2021 to 2024 wasn’t haloed in fairytale spectacle until a string of firsts came along.
Humble beginnings:
- Early years: local stages, TV guestings, mall tours, and small venue concerts
- 2022: Their second album, “Feel Good,” didn’t capture national and international headlines
The breakthrough:
- 2023: “Pantropiko” dropped, the first sign of a potential breakthrough; tropical pop built on Filipino sound that became a TikTok phenomenon and a summer anthem across the Philippines
- 2024: BINI entered Spotify’s Global Top Artist Chart; the first Filipino artist ever to do so!
The cascade of more firsts:
- The first Filipino act at KCON
- The first Filipino artist to win Best Asia Act at the MTV EMAs
- Sold-out BINIverse concert
- Tickets for their first solo show sold out in under 2 hours
By 2025:
- Over 1 billion streams on Spotify
- World tour announcement
- BINI Nike campaign
- Launched their own cosmetics line
It didn’t look like anything big was happening. Not when peering from the outside. But something was being built, mortar binding brick, hard work encased in consistency until these eight Filipinas rose tall into view, the world finally recognizing “BINI.”
What Walking Onto That BINI Coachella Mojave Stage Took
Coach Mickey Perz reached out to Matrix Katindig, collaborative choreographer of the Besties, BINI’s official backup dancer group, and asked about availability. Katindig would later learn that the girls had handpicked the group themselves.
Perz’s philosophy for the girls? Train them like athletes. Their live vocals and their dancing are their strength. Not the production.
Rehearsals for Coachella 2026 were a month long with almost no breaks in between, laced with sleepless nights and do-overs to perfection.
That’s just one part of the machine. More than one choreographer was holding the fort with the girls. More than one manager. More than one stage production designer. Really, more than one of almost every role that filled the tapestry of what would be the BINI Coachella moment.
“
Before Weekend 1, the group admitted their fear wasn’t stage fright. Stacey said it was, “What if no one would watch us?”
Coachella 2026 Pre-Set Reflection
A packed Mojave tent broke that fear and answered the question.

- Announced their “Signals” World Tour shortly after
- Topped every female act on the platform (Justin Bieber was the only name above theirs)
