How to hire remote engineers?
To hire remote engineers, start by defining the engineering work you need help with, including the required specialisation, software, and deliverables. Find candidates with experience in similar projects, then assess their technical skills through a project walkthrough and a practical work sample. Before hiring, agree on who will review and approve their work, particularly where state licensing rules apply. Set up secure file access and clear communication procedures before sharing project information.
Your senior engineers are reviewing drawing revisions and assembling calculation packages while the design reviews only they can do wait for a free afternoon.
Pressure? Pressure.
In your industry alone?
No. It’s industry-wide, U.S.-wide.
ASCE’s 2025 Report Card estimates a $3.7 trillion shortfall between planned US infrastructure investment and the spending needed to put it in good working order.
Here’s a related projection from BLS:
6% employment growth for civil engineers and 12% for industrial engineers between 2025 and 2035.
Passing part of that workload to a remote engineer is first an issue of scope.
How do you settle which tasks leave your desk and who signs off on what comes back?

What Does It Mean To Outsource An Engineer?
Outsourcing an engineer is about handing specific engineering work, such as drawings, calculations, or technical reports, to someone outside your office or payroll; “outsourcing” is often akin to “offshore” or outside your geography. All while you and your local firm remain responsible for the result.
You can arrange remote engineering outsourcing in these ways:
Someone on your side still sets priorities, supplies accurate project information and arranges the technical review.
Someone in your team is still responsible for quality; a fact that remains unchanging regardless of where your engineers are from.
What Are the New Independent Contractor Rules?
In February 2026, the Department of Labor proposed new independent contractor rules, built around a test that weighs mainly the employer’s control and the worker’s opportunity for profit or loss.
The federal standard has changed three times in five years, so confirm. Confirm the current version each time. Take legal advice on any specific arrangement for an extra safety net.
For an offshore hire, settle in writing: who employs the engineer, who runs payroll, who’s responsible for role changes, and which party carries which obligations when it comes to work.
Which Engineering Work Can a Remote Engineer Handle?
Your remote engineers can take care of anything produced in design software and documents. For duties where being on site is an absolute must, give those to your local team members.
Below is how BLS describes duties of offshore engineers and local or licensed engineers in the US:
Analyzing plans and survey reports. Using design software. Preparing cost estimates. Submitting permit applications is among civil engineers’ duties. Surveying and construction oversight. BLS stamps these as on-site duties.
Electrical engineers use design software to create models, diagrams, and layouts. They also inspect and test systems and supervise manufacturing or construction.
Mechanical engineers use computer technology to create and analyze designs and generally work in offices.
Industrial engineers collect data on processes and production and may observe factory layouts.
You’ll learn that some of that work doesn’t need an engineer’s credentials.
What Happens to Licensing When Outsourcing Remote Engineering Work?
Entry-level civil engineers don’t need a license. Engineers typically need a state-issued license to provide services directly to the public, and a Professional Engineer may oversee other engineers, approve design plans, and sign off on projects.
Each state issues its own licenses, and most states recognize those from other states that meet or exceed their requirements. Use BLS’s data to fill in distinctions in the different types of engineer titles and responsibilities.
Can virtual assistants for engineers handle licensing?
A remote engineer who isn’t licensed in your project’s state can prepare drawings and calculations. For outsourced work, state laws generally allow only a licensee to seal documents that the licensee prepared, or that were prepared under their responsible charge – PE licensed.
The NCEES Model Law calls it “responsible charge,” which, elaborated simply, means direct control and personal supervision of engineering work.
The reviewer’s name should always be in the scope prior to any work, for deliverables that require said seal or public safety sign-off.
Whenever you’re faced with something you’re unsure what the requirements are, when in doubt (as the old adage goes), stop and ask. Reach out to the licensing board in the state where the project is located.
What Does a Remote Engineer Cost in the US?
The median wage of American engineers, according to BLS, is $108,620. (May 2025) Salaries listed in the table are classified by “engineering disciplines” or “engineering fields.” They range from $100,840 to $120,630 a year.
Engineer Salary Comparison US:
The lowest 10% of civil engineers earned under $68,240. The highest 10% earned over $163,220.
As for electrical engineers, the figures range from $76,550 to $184,300.
Something about employers: Civil engineers in federal government earned a median of $ 117,790, while those in nonresidential building construction earned $82,400.
The median for civil engineering technologists and technicians is $64,950, against $100,840 for civil engineers. Figures for electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians and electrical engineers are $78,190 and $120,630. (BLS Reports)

What Are the Additional Costs For Engineer Salaries?
By “additional costs,” we’re referring to costs outside base. For full time private industry workers in June 2026, BLS found employers paid $17.03 an hour in benefits against $36.97 in wages – 46 cents of benefits for every wage dollar.
On the $100,840 civil median, about and additional $46,500, it brings the total to $147,300. Not including recruitment, software licenses, training, and management time.
A Note on These Numbers: They describe US employees. For outsourced or offshore engineering, especially outside the US, ask each provider to give you the total, including numbers outside base (and trust us when we say the cost will be much more friendly because of geography).
Where Do You Find Remote Engineers?
Outsourcing is already how much of this profession works. It’s just not reported online or on social media with fanfare-like verve (American firms are way too busy to make noise on socials anyway!).
Engineering services firms employ 51% of civil engineers, and 22% of electrical engineers, too. Buying engineering capacity from a provider is an ordinary route, and you can use several channels:
- Referrals from former colleagues and project partners who have seen someone’s work firsthand
- Engineering job boards, where a posting names the discipline, project type and software instead of a broad title
- Industry associations and specialist groups that reach engineers who know a particular sector
- Recruiters who understand engineering credentials and can screen for project experience when you’re short on time
- Staffing providers or managed providers, when the work is continuing, or you foresee part-time work that will eventually branch out to full-time – drafting, modeling, calculations, or technical documentation
Whichever channel you use, the posting should describe the following: actual project, required software, essential versus good-to-have qualifications, expected deliverables, pay range, and time zone overlap.
What Should You Look For in a Remote Engineer?
What you want is to find out whether a candidate has done your kind of work. The point which that bullets on a résumé won’t thoroughly cover; you’ll have to proactively find out by “working with” candidates.
How do you work with someone without technically “working with them” (because it’s still the interview phrase)?
Find Out What They Can Do Before Hiring Them
How do you get a feel for working with someone before they’re officially on the team?
Learn about their work experiences in the interview itself. Let them walk you through a past project, explaining what work they handled personally and which tools they used.
Often, it’s more about “type of experience” than “level of experience.” Drawing commercial buildings is an expertise, but that engineer may have never had hands-on experience with a plant layout.
Check Their Documentation Skills
Since engineering work passes through different people before approval, have a closer look at their documentation skills. Have you gone through their design calculations and updated drawings? Changes to specifications and notes on technical decisions?
Documentation skill can be measured by how the next person won’t need to retrace every single step back to the entirety of the design process.
In the interview, check for:
- Experience on projects similar to yours
- Qualifications the role requires
- Software knowledge and experience, whether that’s AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, SolidWorks, ANSYS, ETABS, SAP2000, or MATLAB (the same ones you use)
- Familiarity with the technical standards that apply
- Care and accuracy in technical work (drawings, calculations, reports, technical specifications, etc.)
- Clear written explanations and timely updates
- Willingness to flag missing information or a possible error
How Do You Interview and Evaluate Engineer Virtual Assistants?
Break the hiring process into four stages, each helping you learn something different about the candidate.
1. Project Walkthrough
Just a 20- to 30 minute-walkthrough. Use this time in the call to confirm experience, availability, pay expectations, working hours, and the type of projects the candidate has handled.
Ask about one that resembles yours, and listen for the difference between direct responsibility and general familiarity.
2. Test with a task from the real job
Build the exercise around work the engineer would perform, from revising a drawing to finding inconsistencies in a technical document.
Set a time limit and explain how you’ll judge the result. For a bit of an incentive, pay for anything that amounts to productive work.
3. Give them an incomplete brief
Provide a project brief with an unclear requirement or a missing piece of information, then ask how they’d proceed and what they’d need clarified first. An engineer who spots the uncertainty early prevents revisions later.
4. Score every candidate the same way
Before the interview proper, go over the criteria. Feel free to use the scorecard below, or add to it according to the skills or qualifications your team is hiring for.

📋 Assessment Area & Evidence Checklist
Complete the scorecard right after each interview and discuss specific examples instead of general impressions of who interviewed best.

How Do You Onboard and Manage Remote Engineers?
Any remote engineer needs the same project context as the rest of the team on the first day. As though they’re right there in person, with you local team, in your physical office.
Prepare these before the start date:
- Project scope, specifications, and current drawings
- Approved templates and documentation standards
- Access to engineering software and project files
- File naming conventions and drawing revision procedures
- Quality assurance steps and the technical review process
- Communication channels, reporting expectations, and meeting schedules
- A first assignment with a clear scope and deadline
Tell them who the internal contact is – the team member they can reach out to if they have project questions or need to arrange reviews.
That person should know the work well enough, or have the expertise and experience, to resolve routine issues and route technical ones to the right reviewer.
Confidentiality and File Security
Engineering files may contain customer information, facility layouts, or proprietary manufacturing details. Before giving a remote engineer access, decide how your company will protect those files. Set up individual accounts, use multifactor authentication where available, and limit access to the files each person needs. Establish rules for downloading and storing files, including what happens to them when the engagement ends.
Your confidentiality and intellectual property agreements should also explain who owns the completed work and how sensitive project information must be handled.
ITAR and EAR Restrictions
Some engineering projects have legal restrictions on who can access their technical data:
Under ITAR, sharing controlled technical data with a foreign person can count as an export, even when that person is working inside the US.
Under the EAR, releasing controlled technology to a foreign national can also count as an export, whether the person is in the US or overseas.
If a project involves defence-related or other controlled technical data, check with legal counsel before giving an offshore engineer access to any files. Your client’s contract may also prohibit sharing project information outside the US.
How Remote Staff Supports Engineering Work for US Companies
Remote Staff has placed Filipino professionals with Western businesses for over 18 years, including engineering talent that supports design work, calculations, drafting, modeling, and technical documentation across infrastructure, construction, manufacturing, utilities, and industrial projects. Software experience varies by candidate and discipline, so the shortlist should reflect the work you need done instead of a generic tool list.
Engagements can be full-time, part-time, or project-based, and Remote Staff handles payroll, onboarding administration and HR support. Manila runs 12 hours ahead of New York during daylight saving time and 13 hours ahead the rest of the year, so overlap comes down to an agreed shift.
FAQs
How much does a remote engineer cost in the US?
BLS medians for May 2025 run from $100,840 for civil engineers to $120,630 for electrical engineers. These are US employee wages, so ask for a separate quote when you’re pricing outsourced or offshore support.
Can a remote engineer sign and seal US drawings?
Only an engineer licensed in the project’s state can seal. State laws generally limit sealing to the licensee who prepared the documents or supervised their preparation, so remote work normally goes under a US PE’s review.
Can remote engineers work to US codes and standards?
Yes, provided they have the relevant knowledge and receive the project documentation. Verify their experience with the standards that apply and arrange a technical review. Licensing and approval requirements still apply.
Do remote engineers have to work US hours?
Only for the overlap you define. Set the hours you need for meetings and reviews, and agree the rest of the schedule around them. Engineers in the Philippines can align a shift with US hours.
